Calcium is a silvery-white metal; that is fairly soft, however muchharder than sodium metal. Calcium is a member that the alkaline-earthmetals (Group II top top the periodic table); these metals react vigorously withwater, although not as violently together the group I steels such as sodium orpotassium:
Ca(s) + 2H2O(l) ——>Ca(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
In the following demonstration, a chunk that calcium steel is dropped into abeaker that distilled water. ~ a second or so, the calcium metal beginsto bubble strongly as it reacts through the water, developing hydrogen gas, and acloudy white precipitate of calcium hydroxide. The visibility of thehydroxide is demonstrated by the enhancement of a couple of drops the phenolphthaleinindicator, which turns the solution pink, indicating the the solution is basic.

Hydrogen gas is produced during the course of this reaction. If friend arenot collecting the gas, perform the procedure in a fume hood or awell-ventilated area to permit the gas to dissipate.
